The city is filled with “ghost bikes.” These are memorials to cyclists who have been killed, and a visual reminder of how we must look out for each other; whether driving, walking, or navigating 5th Avenue’s insane bike lanes.
There was an ugly white “ghost” stroller locked to a pole across the street from BOING BOING last week. I can tell you, although that corner is dangerous, there has never been a fatality. Some crossing guard put it there to warn drivers near the school. Someone else moved it around until the press, on a slow news day, decided this was a BIG STORY.
Bad idea. Bad art. Bad story.
In actuality, the stroller represents the death of common sense.
There were no less than THREE local news stations in the shop yesterday. Everyone clamoring around, asking questions about some crossing guard’s idea of street art. Is this news? If there had been an accident we all would have heard about it…but there wasn’t, and that’s the bottom line.
I ask you, “If a white stroller was found in a black neighborhood, would anyone notice?”
